Founded in 2008, Elio Motors made waves last year when it announced that its three-wheeled, 84mpg Elio would be built at a former General Motors plant in Louisiana. Although it appears as though the Elio is facing some delays – the company originally promised it would be on sale in mid-2014, but that target date has now been pushed back to the first quarter of 2015 – Elio Motors’ CES appearance signals that the three-wheeler is nearly ready for prime time.
“Elio Motors is focused on affordability, and with an 8-gallon tank that can travel upward of 670 miles without the need for a fill up, this vehicle is unlike anything else in today’s market.” said Paul Elio, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Elio Motors. “Our ultra-high mileage appeals to consumers in addition to our aftermarket-friendly design and assortment of customizable options.”
The Elio will carry a base price of $6,800, with the trike’s list of standard features including power windows and door locks, ABS and air conditioning. Elio Motors also promises that the Elio will receive a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Transportation Administration.
The last we heard the Elio was slated to be powered by a 1.0L three-cylinder engine developing 70 horsepower, but that unit has apparently been swapped out for a 0.9L three-cylinder with 55 horsepower. Transmission choices remain unchanged – buyers will have the option of a five-speed manual or automatic.
