Nissan’s tiny Micra to be offered in Canada

January 10, 2014
Nissan’s Canadian lineup will add a new model later this year: The Micra mini car, a city-oriented hatchback that slots in below the automaker’s subcompact Versa Note.

Sold in a number of global markets under various nameplates, a previous version of the Micra was sold in Canada until the early 1990s. The latest Micra will not, at least for the time being, be sold in the United States.

“After 21 years, the Nissan Micra is returning to Canada to change the automotive landscape,” said Christian Meunier, President, Nissan Canada, in a statement released to the media. “Micra will provide Canadians with the unbeatable value, Japanese quality, European bold styling and fun driving experience that they deserve in a small car.”

Nissan is withholding any specifics about the Micra until its official debut next week at the Montreal Auto Show, but specifications may not differ significantly from the essentially identical Nissan March sold in Mexico. That model uses a 106-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine to send power to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic gearbox. Other engines offered in global Micras are equipped with a CVT, however, which may better fit Nissan’s strategy in Canada.

Nissan says that the car it will unveil in Montreal will have been specifically tailored for the Canadian market.

Micras are built in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and other assembly plants across the globe. Unveiled in its latest iteration at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show before hitting the market in late 2010, the current model received a facelift in 2013.
