Range-topping S-Class to be called Maybach?

January 16, 2014
Daimler killed off its ultra-luxury Maybach brand in 2011, but the German automaker will reportedly resurrect the historic nameplate for the range-topping version of its latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Although its days as a standalone brand are over, the Maybach name is set to return on the back of Mercedes’ flagship S-Class model. According to Autoweek, Mercedes will launch an extra-long wheelbase version of the S-Class later this year that will be sold under the Maybach banner.

In addition to its stretched frame, the Maybach will feature a much more luxurious interior with added appointments like a power-operated center partition. Even the Maybach’s rear doors could be reshaped to aid in rear seat access.

Power for the Maybach model will be provided by the same turbocharged V12 that debuted under the hood of the S600 at the recent Detroit auto show. Both regular and armored versions of the Maybach will be offered.

Pricing for the Maybach model is unclear at this point, but figures in the $300,000 range have been rumored.

The Maybach will be the range-topping version of the conventionally configured S-Class, but Mercedes also has plans to introduce a Pullman limousine model with a 2+2+2 layout that could command upwards of $500,000.
