Audi unveils fully-armored A8 L Security

January 19, 2014
Audi has introduced an armored variant of its long-wheelbase flagship sedan called A8 L Security.

The A8 L Security is nearly identical to a regular-production extended-wheelbase A8 when viewed from the outside but it gains several hundred pounds’ worth of armor under the skin. The armored plating is installed in a secured zone of Audi’s Neckarslum, Germany, factory, and the Volkswagen-owned automaker says it takes specially-trained workers up to 450 hours to finish outfitting a car.

Thanks to the aforementioned armored plating and a reinforced aluminum body, the A8 L is able to withstand all sorts of impacts including NATO sub-caliber bullets and hand grenades. All glass surfaces are fitted with a splinter-inhibiting polymer, and the sedan can reach speeds of up to 50 mph with a flat tire thanks to polymer rings on the rims.

Buyers with particularly determined enemies can order the A8 L Security with an emergency exit system that fractures the bolts that hold the door hinges in place, a fire extinguisher system, a smoke extractor, an emergency fresh-air system and additional protection for the fuel tank and the battery.

Inside, the A8 L Security offers two individual rear seats with massage and ventilation functions and an intercom that lets the occupants communicate with the outside world without opening the windows.

Security-conscious buyers can choose from a 4.0-liter TFSI V8 engine that makes 435 horsepower and 442 lb-ft. of torque or a 6.0-liter W12 engine rated at 500 ponies and 560 lb-ft. of twist. Both mills send power to all four wheels via an automatic transmission and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.

Audi has not published pricing information for the A8 L Security, but the expect a price tag well into the triple digits.
