Shelby celebrates Cobra’s 50th birthday with special model

January 20, 2014
Shelby American has introduced a special variant of the Cobra to celebrate the model’s 50th anniversary.

The limited-edition model stands out from a regular Cobra thanks to a Viking Blue paint job and a yellow stripe that runs across the front end, a livery inspired by Cobras that tore up race tracks in the middle of the 1960s. Edition-specific badges are affixed to the front fenders and the hood while retro-styled 15-inch alloy wheels mounted on Goodyear tires finish off the period-correct look.

The look continues inside with a three-spoke steering wheel with a wooden rim, bucket seats upholstered in black leather and a simple dashboard that houses seven analog gauges and a small array of switches.

Shelby believes paying homage to the Cobra is important because it is one of the most iconic American sports cars of all-time.

“The 289 FIA Shelby Cobras were among the most important cars in American racing history. Combining a robust, powerful American engine with a lightweight chassis was sheer brilliance. Shelby’s formula still resonates today and is followed by automakers worldwide,” explained John Luft, the president of Shelby American, in a statement.

Just 50 examples of the commemorative Cobra will be built. The car will cost $94,995 when equipped with a fiberglass body or $159,995 when fitted with an aluminum body. The engine bay is empty regardless of what body material is chosen and buyers will have to buy and install an engine at an extra cost.
