Chevrolet unveils race-ready Camaro Z/28.R

January 22, 2014
Chevrolet’s legendary Camaro Z/28 nameplate is heading back to the race track. Chevy announced on Tuesday that it will campaign a new Camaro Z/28.R model for the 2014 IMSA Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge series.

Although most racecars are mere shells of their production counterparts, the Z/28.R is actually closely related to the Z/28 that will arrive in dealer showrooms this year. In fact, the Z/28.R shares its drivertrain, front splitter, rear spoiler, hood extractor vent, rocker panels and belly pan with the production car. The only significant difference between the two are a revised suspension and mandated safety equipment.

“Apart from series-mandated equipment and the specialized suspension components needed for endurance racing, the Z/28.R is as close to a production-spec race car as you’ll find,” said Mark Kent, director of racing for Chevrolet.

The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R will make its racing debut in a 2.5-hour endurance race before making its series debut at 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona. The Z/28.R will compete in the GS class.

The Camaro Z/28 has a strong racing history dating back to the first-generation of the car in 1967.
