“I very much regret that he is leaving the company for personal reasons,” Dr. Zetsche added.
A Reuters report notes that Renschler had been rumored as a potential successor to Zetsche, suggesting the resignation is not the result of disagreement with other executives or the company’s board of directors.
The executive will be replaced by Markus Schäfer, a 20-year veteran who led production planning for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and previously ran the company’s Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant.
“Markus Schäfer is a proven expert,” said Dr. Zetsche. “His broad knowledge of our manufacturing and his international experience from his positions in the United States make him extremely well qualified for these tasks.”
