Saleen developing Tesla-based EV

January 31, 2014

Boutique automaker Saleen has announced it is preparing to unveil a new concept car based on the all-electric Tesla Model S.

“I fully intend to produce one of the most compelling Teslas ever to hit the roadway,” affirmed company founder and CEO Steve Saleen in a statement.

Saleen did not provide any concrete details about the yet-unnamed electric sports car but the company ambitiously promises it will be different than any other EV on the market today. While the car will ride on the Model S’ bones, it will boast a revolutionary design penned in-house and a host of drivetrain modifications that will make it considerably faster than even the most potent regular-production S.

Saleen has historically specialized in making aesthetic and mechanical modifications to muscle cars like the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro, but the company explains Tesla’s values of elite power, style and performance are similar to its own.

“I have admired their craftsmanship,” summed up the company’s founder, “we share a desire to also produce vehicles that are not dependent on fossil fuels and which accomplish this fuel independence with a tremendous assemblage of grace and technology.”

A full set of details about Saleen’s first EV will emerge in the coming months. Look for the car to debut at a major auto show early next year and go on sale shortly after.
