• Kia planning first Mexico factory?

    June 2, 2014

A new report finds that Kia will soon begin work on its first plant in Mexico as the South Korean company and its affiliate, Hyundai, look to resolve capacity constraints and keep pace with U.S. market growth.

Citing anonymous sources close to the situation, Reuters reports that Kia’s new facility will be located in Monterrey. It will produce two small models and possess an annual production capability of 300,000 units.

Should the report prove accurate, it could provide another signal that Hyundai and Kia are ready to abandon their unofficial moratorium on production capacity expansion.

In 2012, Hyundai chairman Chung Mong-koo implemented an output freeze amid concerns that the companies’ rapid growth could adversely affect quality. But now, with many of Hyundai and Kia’s factories running at – or above – capacity, it appears that a new phase of building might be underway.

Hyundai officially announced in March that it will create a new factory in Chongqing, China, to keep up with ever-increasing demand in the country. The Mexico plant could be the next step in the growth plan.

“Hyundai and Kia are now more flexible with building new plants as their global manufacturing capacity has reached limits,” Suh Sung-moon, an auto analyst at Korea Investment & Securities, told Reuters. “Without new factories, the duo is expected to lose market share in 2016 for the first time in over a decade.”

  • Nissan teases new pickup for June 11 debut

    June 2, 2014
Nissan has released a teaser image of a new pickup model that is scheduled to be unveiled next week.

The rendering, posted on Instagram, shows the truck’s general outline and a few details of the front end. The headlights appear to be surrounded by LED daytime-running lights, hinting at a modernized appearance. Other features include air intakes below the headlights and a roof rack atop the cab.

The headlights feature a swept design that is closer to the Pathfinder, while the hood crease resembles the 2015 Murano.

There’s a special member of the #Nissan family on the way,” Nissan notes in a caption for the image, without any additional details.

The company is expected to introduce updates to its Frontier and Titan pickups this year or early in 2015. Rumors suggest diesel and hybrid powertrains may be coming to the midsize Frontier, while a Cummins-sourced 5.0-liter V8 turbo diesel mill is expected to be added as an option for the full-size Titan.

The next-generation Titan has been promised to be unveiled at the Detroit auto show. If the company is still sticking to the same debut plans, the Frontier may be the more likely identity of the teaser photo.

Nissan will pull the veil from the mystery pickup on June 11.

  • Toyota celebrates 10 millionth Kentucky-built car

    June 1, 2014

The 10 millionth Toyota built in Kentucky rolled off the assembly line last Thursday. To mark the occasion, Toyota held a ceremony honoring its workers.

The 10 millionth car was a white Toyota Camry Hybrid, which was parked beside the first Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky car, a white 1988 Camry sedan, for the festivities. However, while the first Camry is preserved on site at TMMK, the 10 millionth car will be given away to one of TMMK’s 7,000 employees via a blind drawing. For comparison purposes, 10 million is also the population of both Kentucky and Indiana.

When the factory opened in 1988, Toyota received 100,000 applicants for just 3,000 openings. Toyota has invested $5.9 billion into the Georgetown, Kentucky location over the past quarter-century. The plant is responsible for building a large portion of Toyota’s US lineup. Both Camry and Camry Hybrids are manufactured at TMMK, along with the Avalon, Avalon Hybrid and Venza. Former models have included the Sienna and Solara.

Currently, the plant has a capacity of half a million cars and 600,000 engines. Starting in 2015, the Lexus ES350 — the first US-assembled model from Toyota’s luxury marque — will also be built at TMMK, adding another 750 jobs and increasing capacity by 50,000 cars.

  • French company launching car-sharing program in US

    June 1, 2014
A French electronics manufacturer named Bollore is investing $35 million to launch a car-sharing service in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Called BlueIndy, the program will be nearly identical to the Autolib’ service that Bollore has operated in the city of Paris, France, since 2011. Users will be asked to pay a small monthly membership fee whose rate has not been set yet, and they will be charged $5 to borrow a car for 20 minutes. The cars can be returned at any BlueIndy station in Indianapolis but they cannot be taken outside of city limits.

BlueIndy will exclusively rent a smart fortwo-like city car dubbed Blue Car. Penned by Italy’s Pininfarina, the Blue Car is powered by a compact all-electric drivetrain that stores energy in a lithium-ion battery pack designed and built in-house by Bollore. It offers space for up to four passengers and it boasts anywhere between 93 and 155 miles of range depending on driving conditions.

Bollore is currently building 25 BlueIndy rental stations and 1,000 public charging stations across Indianapolis. The company plans on kicking off the program with at least 500 Blue Cars but it has not announced when the infrastructure will be operational.

Indianapolis mayor Greg Ballard has been an avid supporter of the BlueIndy program. He has often voiced his desire to replace at least 3,100 city-owned gas-powered cars with cleaner electric, hybrid or natural gas-burning models by 2025, and he has pledged to turn Indianapolis into “the most electric city of the country.”

Bollore executives hope to offer their car-sharing service in other U.S. cities once the Indianapolis pilot program is up and running. Hervé Muller, the president of BlueIndy, believes car-sharing programs will primarily be popular among younger buyers who don’t want to take on the financial responsibility of owning a car.

  • Fiat to sell Mitsubishi-based pickup?

    June 1, 2014
A new report finds Fiat is preparing to launch a re-badged version of the eight-year old Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck.

Fiat’s first-ever body-on-frame pickup truck will be offered in several body configurations including a single cab with a long bed and a double cab with a short bed. The yet-unnamed model will wear a brand-specific front fascia but the bulk of its body panels will be sourced straight from the Mitsubishi parts bin.

In Europe, power will likely come from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine rated at 134 horsepower and 231 lb-ft. of torque. Linked to a five-speed manual transmission that spins all four wheels, the oil-burner will send the truck to a top speed of 103 mph while enabling it to tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Whether Fiat’s upcoming truck will be built alongside the L200 in Thailand is not known. It will be sold across Europe and in a host of global markets such as Russia, Africa and the Middle East but Fiat is not planning on adding the pickup to its lineup in the United States.

Fiat Professional currently sells a small unibody truck dubbed Strada, and company CEO Sergio Marchionne hopes the addition of a more rugged pickup will help the division sell 600,000 cars a year by 2018, up from 431,000 last year.

Official details about Fiat’s pickup will emerge next year. The truck is scheduled to greet the public for the first time in 2016 and go on sale shortly after.

  • Honda Super Cub granted 3D trademark

    June 1, 2014

Japan’s Patent Office has granted the first three-dimensional trademark registration it has awarded to an automaker. The recipient was Honda’s Super Cub motorcycle, which has sold more than 87 million units worldwide.

The 3D trademark acknowledges that the Super Cub’s iconic shape has intrinsic value, just like a company’s logo, and bestows upon it all the protections a traditional trademark would offer. It is extremely rare for an industrial product of any kind to receive one.

Introduced in 1958, the Super Cub had a unique step-through design that allowed ease of use for those not accustomed to traditional motorcycles. It has been in continuous production since and sold in over 160 countries. Most importantly, its overall design has been kept largely the same throughout its 56-year history.

The Super Cub was sold as the Honda 50 (and as engine size increased, the Honda Passport C70 and C100) in the United States, as Piper Aircraft company already had a trademark to the name Super Cub. Its marketing tagline, “You meet the nicest people on a Honda,” is widely regarded to have changed Americans’ perceptions about motorcycles and their riders as outlaws, broadening the appeal of two-wheeled transport.

In many developing countries, the Super Cub is a primary mode of transportation. It has been compared to the Ford Model T and original VW Beetle as a vehicle that put the world’s masses on wheels.

Muscle-Car vom Feinsten: Der neue Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

Azubi-Traum: Der VW Golf GTI "Wolfsburg Edition"

Zwölf VW-Lehrlinge durften ihre GTI-Vorstellung verwirklichen

Auf den Türen prangen die Silhouetten von Wolfsburger Sehenswürdigkeiten

    Reifnitz (Österreich), 30. Mai 2014

    Nummer sieben haut rein
