• [Live Images] All-new 2015 GMC Yukon range debuts

    September 15, 2013
General Motors’ truck division has taken the wraps off of its next-generation full-size SUVs.

Returning as both Yukon and Yukon XL models – that’s short and long-wheelbase – the new trucks promise more comfort and refinement than before, plus segment-leading fuel economy. Once again, GMC will also offer its premium Denali package with unique engines and an upgraded interior on both Yukons.

The Yukons remain kissing cousins to Chevrolet’s all-new 2015 Tahoe and Suburban.Â

    The goods

Underneath, both trucks are closely related to the automaker’s new-for-2014 full-size pickup trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which means they continue to ride on a separate fully boxed ladder frame composed of 75 percent high-strength steel and mounted to the steel body by new sheer-style mounts. Though that frame makes the trucks sound old school, it helps differentiate them from the automaker’s more casual-duty GMC Acadia. As a result, the Yukon will be rated to tow up to 8,500 lbs. (or 8,300 lbs. with 4×4), while the 20.4-inch longer Yukon XL is capable of hauling 8,300 lbs. (or 8,000 lbs. with 4×4).

Both 4×2 and 4×4 models return, and while the new V8 engines boast similar displacement to their predecessors, they offer more power and will, presumably, be more fuel efficient. GM hasn’t released fuel economy numbers yet, but the automaker said that the Yukon/Yukon XL’s 5.3-liter V8 will be rated at 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft. of torque, while the range-topping Denalis step up to a 6.2-liter V8 rated at 420 ponies and 450 lb-ft. of torque. Regardless of engine, a six-speed automatic transmission will be standard.

Both engines feature direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing to reduce fuel consumption and improve power delivery.

GM is also including an automatic locking rear differential as standard equipment, while other upgrades like wider wheels, DuraLife disc brakes and a wider rear track should improve the vehicles’ utility. Notably, the Denali models also include a magnetic ride control to deliver a more premium ride quality.

    New style

Both trucks are evolutionary rather than revolutionary in the styling department – at least outside. Sharing little in common with their pickup siblings (and only a side profile with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban), they feature headlamps more in tune with GMC’s current styling direction, plus a more striking side profile.

To set Denali models apart further, the upmarket models will feature LED running lamps up front and LED tail lamps, as well as HID headlamps.

Inside, however, the trucks make their biggest leap. No longer sharing a dashboard with the pickups, they get a more car-like setup with more upmarket materials than before. A Bose audio system with a touchscreen head unit is standard for all Yukons, while the Denali also includes a noise-cancelling system to quell undue ambient rumble.

Aiding passenger convenience, the new trucks feature fold-flat second and third-row seats plus about two inches of increased rear-seat legroom regardless of wheelbase.

GMC will offer more safety features than before, including forward collision alert, front parking assist, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and front/rear automatic braking. In addition, the automaker’s Safety Alert seat, which vibrates individual sides of the seat base to alert drivers to impending crash threats, will be available.

Keyless entry and push-button start are newly available for 2015 as well.

GMC says to expect the Arlington, Texas-built 2015s to arrive in the first quarter of 2014.

  • [Live Images] Redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban unveiled

    September 15, 2013
General Motors has revealed its next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban full-size SUVs. Significantly more differentiated from the Silverado pickup than before, the new trucks boast fresh styling inside and out along with more power, refinement and safety technology.

Outside, the ‘utes feature a distinctive front end treatment marked by a sizable two-part chrome grille and unusual projector-beam headlights with spiked edges. Unlike with past models, not a single exterior panel is shared with the Silverado.

Underneath the sheetmetal lies a strengthened, fully-boxed ladder frame and a retuned suspension. Electric-assist steering is standard, and high-end LTZ models benefit from GM’s magnetic ride control adaptive dampers.

The cabin features a sleeker, more swept-back look that, again, is distinct from the Silverado. Stitched leather and metallic-appearance trim create an upscale feel, and Chevrolet says that elements like inlaid doors contribute to significantly lower levels of interior noise. Legroom has been increased by two inches for second-row passengers, while the third-row now folds flat into the floor instead of needing to be removed for maximum cargo space.

On the tech front, the Tahoe and Suburban is available with Chevrolet’s latest MyLink infotainment system, which integrates smartphone connectivity, stereo and navigation function into an eight-inch touchscreen that motors upwards to reveal a hidden storage compartment. Up to six USB ports and six power outlets – including a three-pronged 110-volt outlet – can be spec’d to feed mobile devices. Â

Available safety equipment has increased by several orders of magnitude, with the options list including forward collision alert, rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist and lane departure warning systems in addition to a segment-exclusive front-center airbag.

One area in which the SUVs continue to be closely related to the Silverado is underhood motivation – all three share the new “EcoTec” 5.3-liter pushrod V8 with cylinder-deactivation, variable-valve timing and direct injection. The mill pairs with a six-speed automatic and produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The Silverado’s 4.3-liter V6 and 6.2-liter won’t be offered, although the latter will be available in the GMC Yukon.

Fuel economy figures have not yet been released, although a more aerodynamic body should help boost mileage, as will a hood and tailgate panels constructed for aluminum. The Tahoe is capable of towing up to 8,500 lbs. (or 8,300 lbs. with 4×4), while the 20.4-inch longer Suburban is capable of hauling 8,300 lbs. (or 8,000 lbs. with 4×4).

The 2015 Tahoe and Surburban will arrive in dealerships in the first quarter of 2014; expect pricing to be announced closer to launch.

  • Citroen preparing two new DS-badged models

    September 15, 2013
Citroën has confirmed it is putting the final touches on two new additions to its premium DS brand.

Speaking with Leftlane at the Frankfurt Motor Show, CitroĂ«n Communications Director Arnaud de Lamothe revealed that the first new DS-badged car is a midsize sedan aimed at cars such as the upcoming Audi A3 Sedan. Little is known about it but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it borrow its platform from the C-ElysĂ©e that debuted earlier last year.

Unsurprisingly, the second DS-badged model is a compact SUV designed to rival the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1, two rising stars on the Chinese market. The yet-unnamed SUV will borrow a sizable amount of design cues from the Wild Rubis concept that was presented at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier this year. Â

Both cars will be publicly unveiled next year a major trade show in China, where DS is marketed as a standalone brand and not a sub-division of CitroĂ«n. It goes without saying that neither car will be offered in the United States, but de Lamothe jokingly promised the automaker will return to U.S. shores before the year 3000.<![CDATA[

  • Mugen tunes 2015 Honda Fit

    September 15, 2013
Famed Honda tuner Mugen has published a full set of details about its two tuning packages for the recently-introduced 2015 Fit. Â

Dubbed RS and Hybrid, respectively, the packages add an aggressive body kit that consists of a new front bumper with big air dams, side skirts, a large spoiler mounted on top of the hatch and a functional air diffuser integrated into the rear bumper. Bespoke trim pieces and emblems all around, a Mugen-specific grille and a selection of large race-inspired alloy wheels finish off the look.

Inside, the Mugen Fit gains bucket seats up front, extra analog gauges for the water temperature, the oil pressure and the oil temperature on the dashboard and aluminum pedals.

Mugen is not making any modifications to the engine but it offers a host of bolt-on accessories such as a sport exhaust line designed to squeeze every last ounce of power out of the Fit’s four-banger. A lowered and stiffened suspension and upgraded brakes round out the list of updates.

The Mugen-tuned Fit is on sale now in its home country of Japan. Honda has not announced whether the upgrades will be available in the United States when the second-gen Fit makes its debut next year. <![CDATA[

  • Suzuki iV-4: SUV-Vorbote steht auf der IAA 2013

    September 15, 2013
