The small overlap test, first introduced in 2012, has been the most challenging trial for vehicles that were not optimized for such impacts. Most automakers, including Hyundai, appear to have quickly placed a high priority on passing the new test, which involves striking the edge of the car head-on into a rigid barrier at 40 mph.
“In the [2015 Genesis] small overlap test, the driver’s space was maintained well, and injury measures recorded on the driver dummy indicated low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity,” the IIHS said in a statement. “The dummy’s head made good contact with the front airbag, which stayed in position during the crash, and the side curtain airbag deployed to protect the head from contact with side structures.”
The redesigned model also earned ‘good’ ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint evaluations. Adding optional front-crash prevention systems brings the ‘Plus’ designation.
“The Genesis is one of only three large luxury cars to earn the Institute’s highest award for 2014,” the IIHS concluded.
