• Lamborghini’s Gallardo-replacing Cabrera hits the ‘Ring

    September 24, 2013
Lamborghini’s Gallardo successor has has been spotted undergoing its first round of shakedown testing on Germany’s Nurburgring. Believed to be called the Cabrera, Lamborghini’s latest supercar will likely bow sometime next year as a 2015 model.

The Cabrera remains covered by camouflage, but it’s clear that Lamborghini’s entry-level model will borrow styling cues from the company’s Aventador flagship. The Cabrera will also adopt the Aventador’s use of lightweight composites – such as carbon fiber and aluminum – which should result in a significant weight loss compared to the outgoing Gallardo.

Up front the “eyes” of the bull are exposed, revealing that the Cabrera will adopt the same style of LED daytime running lights as the Aventador. Two large are inlets are also visible in the lower section of the front bumper.

Heavy camouflage masks most of the Cabrera’s other design details, but air vents just aft of the front doors and quad exhaust outlets will be part of the package.

The Cabrera will retain the Gallardo’s V10 engine, but power should increase to 600 horsepower. The Cabrera will be offered exclusively with an automatic transmission.

Carbon ceramic discs can be seen peeking out from behind the Cabrera’s multi-spoke wheels, indicating the stopping tech will at least be on the car’s option list, if not standard.

Look for the Lamborghini Cabrera to make its auto show debut sometime in 2014.

  • GM buys back 120 million shares from UAW

    September 23, 2013
General Motors announced on Monday morning that it has come to terms with the United Auto Workers to purchase 120 million shares of its Series A Preferred Stock from the union’s Retiree Medical Benefits, better known as VEBA.

All in, GM will pay the UAW about $3.2 billion for the 120 million shares, netting a per unit price of about $27. GM said it expects to record a special charge of $800 million related to the purchase in the third quarter.

The UAW’s VEBA health care fund currently holds 260 million shares of Series A Preferred Stock. Canada Holdings also has 16 million shares of GM stock in its portfolio.

While GM is buying back its stock, the federal government is selling off its remaining shares in the Detroit automaker. The Treasury Department recently sold off over 110 million shares of GM stock, leaving the government with about 101 million GM shares. The United States expects to exit GM ownership by the end of 2014.

  • Ford unveils 2014 Transit Connect Taxi

    September 23, 2013
Ford has lifted the veil off of the 2014 Transit Connect Taxi at a transportation trade show held in St. Louis, Missouri.

Based on the all-new second-gen 2014 Transit Connect, the taxi is longer and lower than its predecessor but it offers more space for passengers and their gear. It features a low load floor that facilitates entry into the cabin and it can be easily converted into a wheelchair-accessible van if needed.

Inside, the taxi-spec Transit Connect can be ordered with high-tech equipment such as navigation, a rear-view camera, SYNC Bluetooth connectivity and MyFord Touch infotainment system. Ford says it provides a more comfortable ride than many of its rivals because it packs a twist-beam rear suspension instead of leaf springs.

The taxi is powered by a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that sends power to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. Operators looking to trim their fuel budget can order the van with a compressed natural gas/liquefied petroleum gas engine prep package that consists of hardened valves, valve seats pistons and rings. Once the van is built, it is sent to a Ford Certified Vehicle Modifier that installs CNG/LPG-specific fuel tanks, fuel lines and fuel injectors. The Blue Oval has not released pricing information or fuel economy figures for the CNG/LPG conversion.

The Transit Connect Taxi is scheduled to go into production next year. Pricing information and availability will be announced closer to its on-sale date.<![CDATA[

  • Ford to stop paying dealers for infotainment training

    September 23, 2013
Ford is doing away with a per-vehicle subsidy that it pays its dealers to teach customers how to use its Sync and MyFord Touch infotainment systems. Known as the Technology Delivery Allowance, the cash payment system was first launched in 2011.

Ford’s program current pays dealers $50 for every vehicle sold with Sync and $75 for every vehicle equipped with MyFord Touch, but those incentives will disappear for the 2015 model year. Dealers often use that cash to pay a specialist to train customers on how to use the systems, which have been panned for being overly complicated and difficult to use.

“We have an individual, and that’s all their job is. We’ve used that money to pay that individual,” Ed Joliffe, owner of Gorno Ford in Woodhaven, Michigan, told Automotive News. “That individual’s job is to show customers everything. If that goes away, that position may go away.”

MyFord Touch has been lambasted by Consumer Reports and was cited as one of the main reasons for Ford’s recent plunge in J.D. Power and Associates’ Initial Quality Study.

It remains to be seen what, if anything, will replace the program, but Ford says it will continue to support dealer training.

“We will share our future plans for this program directly with dealers,” Ford spokeswoman Elizabeth Weigandt said. “Ford remains committed to providing valuable dealer-focused programs, such as training, digital customer tools and our In-Vehicle Technology Call Center.”

Weigandt added that the Technology Delivery Allowance was setup in 2011 as “a temporary resource”.

The end of the Technology Delivery Allowance program won’t affect the Lincoln brand.<![CDATA[

  • Honda Accord Hybrid to list from $29,945

    September 23, 2013
Honda says that its new Accord Hybrid sedan will be priced at $29,945 when it hits the market on October 31.

That figure puts the battery-electric Accord’s base price, which includes a mandatory $790 destination and handling charge, well above its closest rivals. By comparison, the Ford Fusion S Hybrid stickers at $26,995, while the Toyota Camry LE Hybrid is priced from $26,950.

The Accord Hybrid’s standard specification includes the automaker’s LaneWatch blind spot display system, a rearview camera, LED daytime running lamps, Bluetooth, dual-zone automatic climate control, alloy wheels and a 10-speaker audio system.

Two higher-spec models, the $32,695 EX-L and the $35,695 Touring, will also be available.

The Accord Hybrid EX-L adds leather seat trim, heated front seats, driver’s seat memory, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and the automaker’s HondaLink cloud-based connectivity system. Topping the range, the Touring brings with the navigation, LED headlamps, adaptive cruise control and a hard drive for the audio system.

Rivals might be priced less, but they won’t match the Accord Hybrid’s 50 mpg city rating. The Accord Hybrid is rated at 50 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway, for a grand total of 47 mpg combined. At 47/47/47 mpg, the Fusion Hybrid is the Accord’s best rival, while the 43/39/41 mpg Camry Hybrid trails its competitors. However, the Fusion Hybrid has come under some fire from owners and critics over allegations that its EPA-rated fuel economy is nearly impossible to achieve. <![CDATA[

  • Porsche 911 Turbo: Jetzt kommt das Cabriolet

    September 23, 2013

  • 1955 Lincoln Indianapolis Concept to cross the auction block

    September 22, 2013
Lincoln’s 1955 Indianapolis concept will cross the block at RM Auctions’ “Art of the Automobile” sale that will open its doors on November 21st, 2013, in New York city.

Named after the famous Indianapolis 500 race, the one-off concept came to life when Henry Ford II asked Turin-based coachbuilder Boano Carrozzeria to create a sporty coupe capable of rivaling Ghia-bodied Chryslers. The Indianapolis was completed in time to debut at the 1955 edition of the Turin Motor Show where it stunned visitors with its futuristic, aircraft-inspired design and its bright orange paint work. Awestruck, Henry Ford II bought the concept on the spot and had it shipped to Dearborn, Michigan.

Ford briefly drove the 221-horsepower V8-powered Lincoln around Dearborn but complained of its excessively bad build quality. He gave it to actor Errol Flynn and it subsequently went through a series of owners over the next two decades until an electrical fire destroyed part of its interior.

The coupe was meticulously restored to its original Turin show specification a little over ten years ago and it took first place in the Postwar Custom Coachwork class at the 2001 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Since then, it has been kept in like-new condition by a private owner and taken out only for select high-profile car shows across the country.

RM expects the 58-year old concept to fetch anywhere between $1.5 million and $2.5 million when it crosses the block.

In addition to the Indianapolis concept, RM will auction off a 1933 Auburn Twelve Custom Speedster, a 1954 Pegaso Z-102 Coupe and a desirable 1957 Dual-Ghia convertible.

  • Tesla stock reaches $185 mark

    September 21, 2013
Tesla Motors (TSLA) shares briefly crossed the $185 mark for the first time yesterday, setting a new record for the California-based automaker. Its market capitalization (the total value of shares) stands at an unprecedented $22 billion.

Tesla stock reached the $150 mark for the first time last month and was given a major boost after the electric vehicle maker founded by Elon Musk ten years ago announced its Model S received the highest crash test rating ever given to a passenger car by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The launch of Tesla’s Holland-based European arm and the inauguration of the first six Supercharger stations in Norway also helped boost the automaker’s stock.

Analysts are split on whether Tesla shares will continue to rise and reach the coveted $200 mark, stay steady or drop in value when the bubble bursts. Deutsche Bank has issued a buy rating for the company and indicated shares might reach $200 in the near future, but Morgan Stanley advised investors to keep their current shares and not buy any more until further notice.

Tesla closed at $183.39 last night. Proving nearly every market analyst wrong, the automaker’s shares have increased by 442 percent in the last twelve months.<![CDATA[

  • First Drive: 2014 BMW X5 [Review]

    September 21, 2013
A favorite of families looking for just a little more oomph in the daily grind, the BMW X5 has long succeeded based on a variety of assets.

Stellar all weather traction, a sportier-than-average feel and, of course, acres of luxury have clearly resonated with buyers. So it’s not that surprising that the all-new X5 merely refines BMW’s South Carolina-born hit for its third generation.

    What makes it tick?

The X5 remains a five or seven-passenger sports “activity” vehicle that attempts to combine the cargo-hauling abilities of a station wagon with the go anywhere capabilities of a mule. Not that any X5 driver has ever intentionally ventured over hill and dale.

Recognizing that, a new rear-wheel-drive model has been added for sunny weather markets. Signified by its sDrive nomenclature (as opposed to xDrive for the brand’s all-wheel-drive system), the new model is powered exclusively by a mostly carried-over 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder, twin-power turbocharged engine that makes 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. This six-cylinder, badged either as X5 sDrive35i or xDrive35i now features a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds, which is an improvement of 0.2 seconds over the previous version.

From there, the lineup climbs to either full-grunt V8-powered xDrive50i or diesel-sipping xDrive35d. The xDrive50i is motivated by an improved version of BMW’s 4.4-liter direct-injection twin-turbocharged V8 that now produces 450 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. That’s an improvement of 43 hp and 37 lb-ft, respectively, over the outgoing model, which helps this hot rod scoot to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

We spent most of our time evaluating the xDrive35d, rated at 255 ponies and 413 torquies. Down 10 horsepower over last year’s diesel model, the engine nonetheless helps this big bruiser hit 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, a 0.7 second improvement.

All engines are mated to BMW’s eight-speed automatic with Steptronic manual-style control via a pair of steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Underneath, BMW offers a variety of chassis settings and options for the fully independent setup. A rear air suspension is there for those who tow, while active road stabilization imparts a sportier feel by reducing lean into corners. Further upping the zippy quotient is an optional active steering control that automatically varies the amount of steering input needed.

For those wanting more, the M Sport trim level has its own buttoned-down user-adjustable suspension. An M50d M Performance (what’s with these names, BMW?) with 546 lb-ft. of torque will be on offer outside of North America.

Improvements like those listed above come at a premium. The base X5 sDrive35i, at $53,725, is $5,000 richer than the outgoing all-wheel-drive model. And the prices only go up from there – a popularly-optioned X5 xDrive35i will sticker for upwards of $60,000. That puts it ahead of nearly any rival you might want to list.

    Evolutionary rather than revolutionary

From a design standpoint, the new X5 has adopted most of the proportions have made the smaller BMW X3 successful. It now appears a little more squished, though it is actually 0.6 inches taller and 1.3 inches longer. At 1.3-inches, it’s a little longer too, but its cues are still unmistakable.

The headlights are now blended to the exterior contours of the twin-kidney shaped grill for a more contemporary look that matches BMW’s latest design DNA. New cues continue under the bumper, but here it’s not just pretty looks.

For 2014, the X5 is equipped with “air curtain” blades that direct air over the fenders to functional vents in the side panels, just behind the front wheels. This so-called air curtain helps make a “blanket” of air over the wheels in an effort to aid the aerodynamics of what essentially is a flying brick. New wide shoulders carry on the feeling of strength and lead to the L-shaped rear braking lights.

Despite an appearance approximating a Frigidaire side-by-side, the X5 now enjoys a 0.31 Cd in the wind tunnel (down from the previous 0.34), which improves both stability and, of course, fuel economy.

    Outside looking in

Interior-wise, BMW has stepped up their game with new “wings” that flank the dashboard, helping it to appear as wide as possible for a new view. The driver-centric instrument panel returns, this time with three customizable color schemes, while interior materials have been upgraded all around. White, blue or red ambient lighting helps to tailor the interior mood during nighttime drives.

A trio of interior trims are now available: Standard in several colors, mocha-tinted X-Line and white-linen Luxury line. Row two includes a 40/20/40 split and available heating elements, plus more usable space for passengers. An optional third row returns for what we’d best describe as “occasional use.” Cargo room improves to 23 cubic feet with the second row up and 66 cubes with it folded down.

On the tech front, a 10.2-inch widescreen display includes newly standard navigation accessed via a convenient touchpad interface. The screen can also be set to display xDrive status, including roll and pitch of the vehicle for off roading. As if.

    On the road

We spent most of our time in an X5 xDrive35d, which offers a little less power than before but manages to feel more sprightly overall. Torquey acceleration from any speed is complemented by a more refined feel than before.

The nought-to-60 mph sprint comes in just under seven seconds thanks to the imperceptibly smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox. Even up and down mountain grades in the Canadian Rockies, we noticed little to no gear hunting.

On the other hand, engaging the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters allowed us to conveniently take matters into our own hands, revealing the X5′s sporty nature. At around 4,600 lbs., the X5 xDrive35d is no lightweight, but it displays a more nimble feel than that figure might suggest. Fuel economy figures haven’t been announced, but BMW is targeting 30 mpg on the highway for the xDrive35d.

Like other BMWs, a rocker switch on the center console offers up ECO-Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes, which do about what their names imply to modify ride quality and throttle response.

The real fun began in Sport mode, which reduced wallow and gave us quicker skinny pedal response. There’s no denying the fact that the X5 rides on a higher-than-car chassis, but this do-anything, go-anywhere (anywhere within reason, at least) crossover has done nothing but improve for its third generation.

    Leftlane’s bottom line

BMW has refined a solid performer that is the (crossover) apple of many customers’ eyes. With an engaging personality, a refined diesel drivetrain and host of aero, power and lightweight tricks on board, it is clearly evident that this remains the Ultimate Driving Machine of crossovers.

We might have hoped for more changes, but why mess with success? The X5 already accounts for nearly a third of BMW’s sales in the U.S. We see little reason for that to change.
