Mitsubishi and Nissan have announced new microcars that will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in late November and go on sale in the first quarter of 2014.
The Mitsubishi eK Space and Nissan Dayz Roox will be the second jointly planned and developed kei car between Mitsubishi and Nissan. The two follow hot on the heels of the first Nissan-Mitsubishi joint car, called the Mitsubishi eK Wagon and Nissan Dayz.
It will likely share the eK Wagon’s 48-horsepower, 660cc motor as well as front- and all-wheel-drive drivetrains. The new models will be distinguished by a higher roof for more interior volume.
The eK Space and Dayz Roox fall into Japan’s highly competitive kei class, in which cars must conform to strict physical dimensions (134 inches length x 58 inches width x 79 inches height) and engine displacements of no larger than 660 cubic centimeters. Such vehicles are eligible for tax deductions in Japan.
Traditionally Nissan has not built its own kei cars, instead rebadging those made by other manufacturers. Mitsubishi has long been a builder of highly popular kei cars and has designed and sold two generations of the eK Wagon already.Â
In December 2010 Nissan entered the current joint venture with Mitsubishi, which led to the development of the eK Space and Dayz Roox. Nissan currently still sells the Moco kei car, which is based on a Suzuki. None are planned for sale in the US.
