According to Reuters, the suits were filed on behalf of two Honda Civic owners who were permanently disfigured after accidents in which shrapnel allegedly released by Takata airbags caused serious injuries to their faces.
The recalled airbags, which were installed in some vehicles manufactured by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota between 1999 and 2011, have been under investigation for some time. Several drivers and passengers have reportedly been killed or seriously injured due to airbag failure or shrapnel from exploding inflators. The problem has been blamed on the propellant chemicals, which are prone to explode with excessive force when exposed to humidity over time.
The full listed of models affected by the recall is available on the NHTSA web site.
