• Mercedes celebrates G’s 35th birthday with special edition

    September 21, 2014
Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the G-Class with a limited-edition model appropriately dubbed 35 Edition.

Offered exclusively in black, white or gray, the 35 Edition stands out from a stock G-Class thanks to gloss black bumpers on both ends, blacked out headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels. All models come standard with the aggressive-looking Sport Package that is available as an option on regular-production Gs.

The cockpit has been similarly upgraded with a four-spoke AMG sport multi-function steering wheel and black Nappa leather on the seats, the door panels and the dashboard. A color screen mounted on top of the dashboard runs the latest generation of Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system.

35 Edition buyers can choose either the G350 BlueTEC or the G500. The G350 is powered by a 3.0-liter diesel-burning V6 engine that sends 211 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. The oil-burner propels the behemoth from zero to 62 mph in 9.1 seconds.

The more powerful G500 packs a 5.5-liter V8 tuned to generate 387 ponies and 390 lb-ft. of twist. Fitted with an eight-cylinder, the G takes 6.1 seconds to reach 62 mph from a stop and it goes on to a top speed of 154 mph.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class 35 Edition is scheduled to go on sale across Germany over the coming weeks and it will be available until May of 2015. The G350 BlueTEC will cost €101,031 (approximately $130,000) and the G500 will retail for €112,812 (roughly $145,000).

Mercedes has not announced if the 35 Edition G will be offered on this side of the pond.

  • Paris preview: Opel Adam S

    September 21, 2014
General Motors’ Opel division has announced it will travel to next month’s Paris Motor Show to introduce a hot-rodded variant of the Adam city car.

Called Adam S, Opel’s latest hot hatch packs a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine tuned to generate 147 horsepower and 162 lb-ft. of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, allowing the Adam S to reach 62 mph from a stop in 8.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 137 mph.

The Adam S returns 36.1 mpg in a mixed European cycle thanks in part to a standard start/stop system. Beefier brakes designed by Opel’s performance-focused OPC division keep the power in check.

Visually, the S stands out from a run-of-the-mill Adam thanks to an aerodynamic body kit consisting of a lip spoiler up front, side skirts, a sizable roof-mounted spoiler and a deep rear bumper. 17-inch alloy wheels come standard, and buyers can personalize their Adam S by picking from ten paint colors and four roof colors.

Interior pictures are not available, but Opel promises the Adam S can be fitted with Recaro bucket seats and a checkered flag headliner. A touch screen-based infotainment system called IntelliLink is available at an extra cost.

Following its debut in Paris, the Opel Adam S will go on sale across Europe next November. The first deliveries are scheduled for early 2015.

  • 2015 Honda CR-V mid-model refresh leaked

    September 21, 2014

An official photo of the Honda CR-V’s minor model change has surfaced online. The refreshed design is expected to make an appearance on 2015 models.

The update of Honda’s class-leading small SUV gives up the triple chrome horizontal bars, bringing the CR-V’s face in line with Honda’s latest models like the new Fit and Civic. Instead, the grille now consists of a large black bar, logo embedded, connecting the headlights.

Redesigned headlights appear to be projector beam units. Framing the headlights are what look to be LED driving lights, bridged by the chrome edges of the grille. The overall effect is an attractive outline of brightwork that encircles the entire headlight-grille unit.

The lower bumper has been retouched as well, and now features a matte dark gray skid plate-esque division overlaying black cladding surrounding the lower section. Sleeker, redesigned fog lamps take on a unique shape filling in windswept bezels. Finally, the side-view mirrors have sprouted integrated turn signals.

The content, alloy wheels, and brightwork indicate that this is likely an EX trim level. We expect that the rear and the interior have been spruced up as well, but since this not a proper release no specs are available at this time. The 2014 Honda CR-V is offered with one engine and transmission choice, a 2.4L, 185hp and 163 lb-ft inline-four with a 5-speed automatic. We’ll have to wait for the official release to find out more.

  • Infiniti to expand lineup by 60 %, add 4 Series-fighting coupe

    September 21, 2014

Infiniti plans to expand its model lineup by 60 percent by the end of the decade, including a new coupe that will compete with the BMW 4-Series.

To help with its ambitious efforts, Nissan’s luxury marque opened a new design center in London this week. According to the automaker, in the past 18 months alone there have already been 10 new Infiniti models penned, including the upcoming Q80 Inspiration debuting at the Paris Motor Show next month.

Speaking at the ribbon-cutting, the company’s chief creative officer and design head Shiro Nakamura explained the new studio: “This is the first step of a global initiative to purify and reinforce the distinctiveness of Infiniti design.” He then revealed studios would soon open in San Diego and Beijing as well.

Infiniti executive design director Alfonso Albaisa added, “with our new generation models, we want… a new romanticism, and London is a great place to find the inspiration for it. London buzzes with youthful excitement.”

Nakamura-san also revealed, as reported by Top Gear, that a BMW 4-Series fighting coupe will appear within a year. Size-wise, it will split the difference between BMW’s 4- and 6-Series. The car would likely replace the Q60 — which is currently a rebadged previous-generation Infiniti G37 Coupe — with design cues taken from the Q80 Inspiration.

What’s more, Nakamura also said that if the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge (pictured), the sedan powered by a Nissan GT-R‘s 560-horsepower twin-turbo V6, makes it to production, there could be a coupe Eau Rouge as well.
