• Court dismisses first ticket issued for using Google Glass while driving

    January 17, 2014
Cecilia Abadie, the first person believed to have been ticketed for using Google Glass while driving in the United States, has won her case with the state of California.

San Diego County Traffic Court Commissioner John Blair ruled on Thursday that Abadie was not in violation of California Vehicle Code 27602, which bars “driving with monitor visible to driver,” when she was pulled over in October 2013 and found to be wearing Google Glass. Although Abadie was wearing Google Glass at the time of her ticketing (she was initially pulled over for doing 80mph in a 65mph zone), Blair ruled that the state could not determine beyond a reasonable doubt that the mobile computing device was on while she was driving.

Abadie hasn’t stated if the device was active while she was driving, but argues that Google Glass’ display is above her field of vision and therefore isn’t a distraction.

“I’m recording a video of all this,” she told reporters outside the courthouse, according to the Associated Press. “Do you feel like I’m not paying attention to you?”

Abadie’s case is likely just the first of many that will pit today’s laws against tomorrow’s technology. Three states have already banned the use of Google Glass while driving, but others argue the technology can be used safely behind the wheel of a car. William Concidine, Abadie’s lawyer, went as far as to compare using Google Glass to changing a vehicle’s radio station.

“I believe there is an information gap,” he said.

Google Glass, which is essentially a wearable computer, is currently in a prototype phase, but the technology will be offered to the general public later this year.

  • Audi releases full pricing, options details for 2015 A3

    January 17, 2014

Audi has published complete pricing and options information for its new entry-luxury small sedan, the Mercedes-Benz CLA250-fighting 2015 Audi A3.

Last year, the four-ring brand announced that the entry-level 2015 A3 Premium will start from $30,795 (including destination) – squeezing just below the CLA250′s $30,825 MSRP. The A3′s price includes a 170 horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, six-speed dual clutch automatic (ignore the Europe-only stick shift pictured above), leather upholstery, a sunroof, xenon headlights and LED tallights.

Now, Audi has detailed the 2015 A3′s upper-level trims and all options packages. The A3 Premium will offer a $500 cold weather package, a $450 aluminum trim package, and a navigation/MMI infotainment touchscreen bundle for $1,900.

The next rung up the trim level ladder is the A3 Premium Plus, which commands $33,695. It adds 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and the aluminum trim package. Stepping up to the Premium Plus also allows buyers to chose from more extras, including the $1,400 Driver Assistance Package with rearview camera and park assist, the $850 Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the $750 Convenience Package with heated, power-adjustable front seats and park assist.

Of note, the navigation system is bundled with Audi Connect on the Premium Plus, bringing its price up to $2900.

Finally, the high-end A3 Prestige, priced from $39,595, nets sporty S line exterior cues, navigation, Audi Connect, Bang & Olufsen audio and full LED headlights as well as the Convenience and Driver Assistance Packages.

The A3 prestige can be further upgraded with the $1,400 Advanced Technology Package – it adds adaptive cruise control and active lane assist – and the Sport Package, a $550 option that includes sports seats, a unique steering wheel and selectable drive modes.

Buyers looking for more power and improved traction can opt for a 220-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which comes with Quattro all-wheel-drive and increases the bottom line by $3,000. It can be paired with any trim level.

Pricing for the 2015 A3 TDI, A3 Cabriolet and S3 sedan will be announced at a later date.

  • Infiniti to ditch IPL in favor of Eau Rogue?

    January 17, 2014
Infiniti will reportedly pull the plug on its Infiniti Performance Line, better known as IPL, in favor of a new Eau Rouge performance range.

Infiniti launched IPL in 2010 with the hopes that the performance division would eventually rival brands like BMW’s M and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG, but those plans never fully materialized. The IPL treatment was offered on Infiniti’s G coupe and sedan, but the performance tweaks were never enough to really stir the soul.

It appears as though Infiniti is ready to give up on the short-lived IPL sub-brand as Edmunds is reporting that all future performance Infiniti models will be sold under the Eau Rouge banner. Infiniti introduced the world to the Eau Rogue name at the 2014 Detroit auto show with a high-performance version of its Q50 sedan.

Infiniti hasn’t announced when the first Eau Rouge vehicle might launch and Michael Bartsch, vice president of Infiniti Americas, admits that the Japanese automaker doesn’t quite know what to do with IPL brand. Although pure speculation at this point, it’s possible Infiniti could position Eau Rogue against M- and AMG-tuned vehicles while IPL competes against brands like Audi’s S-line.

The Eau Rogue concept features an aggressive body kit and a twin-turbocharged engine with at least 500 horsepower on tap, and we’d expected to see similar hardware on the road-going version of the performance sedan.

  • Dodge Avenger headed to scrap heap; no successor planned?

    January 17, 2014

A new report finds that the Dodge Avenger isn’t long for this world, and more surprisingly, it won’t be replaced by another model.

With sales of the Dart currently compromised by the larger, more potent and similarly priced Avenger, Dodge will soon exit the midsize sedan segment altogether to give its compact sedan some much-needed breathing room, according to The Truth About Cars.

Though the Avenger’s demise had long been viewed as all but certain, it was widely assumed that it would be replaced by a new midsize four-door with a different moniker.

Dodge has not confirmed the news, but the 2015 Chrysler 200‘s trim level structure could potentially lend credence to the TTAC report. Though generally designed as a more upscale model than its predecessor, the new 200 is available in rental-grade, hubcap-equipped entry-level form, a trim Chrysler may not have offered if it was readying a lower-priced, equivalently-sized Dodge sedan that would be better-suited to fleet sales.

On the other hand, it would be an odd move for Dodge to completely abandon the high-volume midsize segment without at least trying to market a new model that’s better differentiated from the Dart in terms of price.

We’ll keep an eye out for further developments and let you know as soon as we learn more about Dodge’s plans.

  • Porsche still considering sub-Panamera sedan

    January 17, 2014
Porsche is still mulling a new sports sedan to slot beneath the Panamera, company head Matthias Muller has revealed.

Porsche was thought to have been close to signing off on the baby Panamera, known as the Pajun, in late 2012, but the company has gone quiet on the project since. However, Muller has confirmed that the Panamera junior is still being seriously considered for production.

“Speaking very frankly, I can say this is one of many ideas we have, to build a car below Panamera,” Muller told Autocar.

The Pajun is no slam dunk for showrooms, though. The launch of the all-new Macan SUV has consumed a lot of Porsche’s resources, with the company still recovering from that financial outlay.

“But it would be a difficult decision, because Porsche has just taken a huge step getting into the Macan market — not just developing the car but doubling the factory capacity, including the body shop and paint shop,” Muller added. “It has been a huge effort for the whole company.”

If given the green light, it is believed that the Pajun would ride on Volkswagen’s lasted MSB platform, which will also underpin future Bentley models. The Pajun would rival vehicles like the BMW 5-Series, offering buyers a range of both gas and diesel six-cylinder engines.

If ultimately approved for production, the Pajun could land in dealer showrooms as soon as 2017.
