• Saleen Automotive nearing bankruptcy

    November 26, 2014
A document published by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reveals that American tuner Saleen Automotive is on the brink of filing for bankruptcy.

The report shows that Saleen owes a total of $5,634,841, including $583,900 in unpaid payroll taxes, $398,176 to a major bank that has been instrumental in keeping the company afloat and $376,888 in other miscellaneous liabilities. All told, Saleen’s total liabilities amount to $5,634,841.

As of September 30th, 2014, Saleen only had $7,261 in its coffers and its assets totaled a mere $688,629. A more recent financial statement is not available.

Saleen has not officially commented on its financial situation, but the company was quoted by the SEC as saying that its ability to survive is in doubt if it doesn’t manage to find a buyer in the near future. Whether or not Saleen is currently involved in talks with a potential new owner has not been disclosed.

The situation is undeniably grim but all hope is not lost yet. Best known for the S7 supercar, Saleen currently has a number of new models in the pipelines including a tuned Tesla Model S dubbed ST (pictured) and a heavily-modified 2015 Mustang called S302 that packs up to 640 horsepower thanks to a potent supercharger. Car & Driver notes the first STs have already been delivered and the company has received several orders for the S302.

Saleen has been in dire financial straits before: it filed for bankruptcy protection in 2007 and it only had $13,246 in cash at the end of September of 2013.

  • Nissan unveils Japanese-spec 2015 GT-R, limited-edition model

    November 26, 2014
Nissan has introduced the updated Japanese-spec 2015 GT-R.
The GT-R has undergone constant tweaks since its introduction at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. The latest set of upgrades includes revised dampers that improve the coupe’s handling, more powerful Brembo brakes on all four corners, a re-worked steering system that transmits less vibrations at idle and additional sound deadening material in the trunk.

Additionally, Japanese buyers have access to a new Nismo-tuned Track Edition model that is equipped with a specific suspension setup, adhesive bonding that enhances the car’s structural rigidity, flared front fenders and six-spoke forged wheels wrapped by track-ready Dunlop tires.

Sources close to Nissan have revealed that the bulk of the upgrades detailed above will make their way to the U.S.-spec GT-R in time for the 2016 model year. Whether or not the Track Edition model will travel across the Pacific is up in the air.

    GT-R 45th Anniversary Edition
Nissan will kick off the 2015 GT-R’s production run with a limited-edition model designed to celebrate the nameplate’s 45th year on the market.

Appropriately dubbed 45th Anniversary Edition, the coupe stands out from the stock GT-R thanks a special paint color called Silica Brass and a host of minor details including a model-specific emblem located at the bottom of the center console and a metal plaque riveted in the engine bay.

Nissan has not made any mechanical modifications, meaning the 45th Anniversary Edition boasts a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 tuned to produce 541 horsepower at 6,500 rpms and 466 lb-ft. of torque between 3,200 and 5,800 rpms. Linked to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends power to all four wheels, the V6 rockets the GT-R from zero to 62 mph in a blisteringly quick 2.9 seconds.

Nissan will build just 45 examples of the GT-R 45th Anniversary Edition. Each one will carry a base price of ¥10,787,040 (about $91,500) and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis starting next February.

  • Subaru reveals limited-edition Forester tS for Japan

    November 26, 2014
Subaru has finally revealed its Forester tS, a special-edition model that will likely be limited to the Japanese market.
The STI-badged package features a more aggressive front fascia with vertical LED strips and a red accent around the grill. A rear spoiler, 19-inch BBS alloy wheels and Brembo brake calipers help complete the look.

On the inside, the package gains a bevy of STI upgrades including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, black leather and suede upholstery and a new shift lever, among other upgrades. Red accents and red stitching provide contrast against the otherwise-black theme.

The Forester tS’ 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 276 horsepower — 26 ponies higher than the US-spec model — and 258 lb-ft of torque, delivered to all four wheels via a CVT automatic.

The company’s STI team retuned the suspension, adding reinforcement and dropping the ride height by 15mm, while the transmission control and vehicle dynamics control have been tweaked for spirited driving.

Subaru only plans to build 300 examples of the Forester tS, with prices starting at the equivalent of approximately $37,000.

  • GM execs peruse Twitter, Facebook for defect complaints

    November 26, 2014
General Motors has reportedly assigned teams to monitor social media for complaints of potential defects.
The program is said to involve 24-hour monitoring on popular platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, along with automotive forums where owners frequently post problems with their vehicles.

“We have to identify issues before they become a problem,” GM president Dan Ammann told Bloomberg in a recent interview.

Amman and other top executives are said to participate in the hunt, sometimes calling customers directly in an attempt to get more information and better handle emerging issues.

The initiative is the latest move in GM’s ongoing reform process, after the ignition-switch defect was repeatedly reported by owners, journalists and lawyers over the span of a decade before the company finally took action.

  • Mazda6 faces recall over tire-pressure monitor

    November 26, 2014
Mazda has issued a recall for its 2014-2015 Mazda6, citing a problem with the tire-pressure monitoring system.
The company has discovered an issue that prevents the system from properly alerting drivers of a drop in pressure if all four tires gradually lose pressure at the same time.

The behavior makes the Mazda6 non-compliant with federal regulations related to tire-pressure monitoring systems, and any vehicle driven with under-inflated tires is more prone to sudden tire failure.

The issue will be resolved via a software update, with the fixing program to begin on December 5. The campaign is said to affect nearly 100,000 vehicles.
