Reports from across the Atlantic claim that BMW is will not be producing its long-awaited Z2 open-top sports car.

The roadster, which may have been spotted in mule form as recently as six months ago, would have been offered with either three- or four-cylinder engines. Two layouts were rumored: front-wheel-drive, which would’ve aligned with the Mini and 1-Series platform; and rear-wheel-drive, which led to speculation that it was part of a Toyota joint project for the next Scion FR-S. Either way, the price point would have straddled the gap between the Miata and the Audi TT and slotting below the Z4.
BMW’s plans to put the Mini Superleggera Vision into production are still on the table, though Mini, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad group head Peter Schwarzenbauer has said it would be an “economically challenging project.”
